The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) on August 25, 2026, clarified the 120-Micron Requirement for Biodegradable and Compostable Plastic Carry Bags.
The following has been stated:
• The Board has clarified that the prohibition under the Punjab Government notification dated April 02, 2025, applies equally to all categories of plastic carry bags, including virgin, recycled, biodegradable and compostable plastic carry bags. Accordingly, the minimum thickness requirement of 120 microns applies uniformly to such carry bags within the areas covered by the notification.
• PPCB Regional Offices have been directed not to grant, renew or extend CTE/CTO to units manufacturing carry bags below 120 microns, and may require an undertaking confirming compliance with the thickness requirement. Existing consents granted or renewed for units manufacturing sub-120-micron carry bags or prohibited identified Single-Use Plastic (SUP) items are to be revoked/cancelled.
• No consent is to be granted for prohibited SUP items such as cups, tumblers, spoons, forks, and straws, and Regional Offices are to continue surprise inspections, including at odd hours, to detect violations and illegal manufacturing.
